The Microbiome Connection

How Cancer & the Microbiome relates to gut health

Common Symptoms

  • Varies by cancer type
  • Immunotherapy side effects
  • Treatment-related gut disruption
  • Colorectal cancer risk factors

How the Microbiome is Involved

The microbiome affects cancer through multiple pathways: by modulating the immune system's tumor-fighting ability, by producing metabolites that can either protect or damage DNA, and by influencing whether immunotherapy drugs work. Patients with higher microbiome diversity tend to respond better to checkpoint inhibitors. FMT from responders to non-responders is being tested in trials.
